Coil upender

A coil upender is an industrial machine specialized for rotating large coils of metal 90 degrees or more into an upright position. Coils of steel, aluminum, stainless steel, copper and other metals can weigh several tons and pose a significant manual handling hazard. The coil upender allows safe and controlled rotating of these heavy coils for ease of downstream processing, storage or transportation. The machine centers and grips the coil horizontally between two powered clamping arms, supported on a rotating actuator. Operators use the upender’s controls to gently tilt the coil vertically onto its circular edge in one smooth motion. This prevents unsafe swinging or shifting of the massive coil during rotation. The centered, secure grip also ensures even weight distribution and prevents distortion of the coil’s shape during lifting. A coil upender may be a large stationary unit integrated into a processing line or a mobile model with casters for warehouse flexibility. Advanced models include programmable rotation angles and speeds, axis alignment checks and torque limiting for overload protection. By allowing effortless 90 degree reorientation of bulky metal coils, coil upenders improve safety and efficiency in steel mills, metals service centers and anywhere large coils must be handled. Their specialized rotating function makes coil upenders an essential materials handling asset.
